Twitter looking to streaming TV
For years, Twitter has given advertisers a unique opportunity to leverage the online conversations happening around television and live broadcast events. Now the company is hoping to take that opportunity even further. According to Bloomberg, Twitter is in talks to add more content from television networks to its service through deals with Viacom and NBC.
Citing sources that are “familiar with the matter,” the publisher reported that Twitter has held talked with Viacom about hosting TV clips on its site and selling ads alongside them. A content partnership with NBC was also discussed. Both seem like a natural progression given Twitter’s most recent series of updates.
The microblogging platform has worked to build up support for visual media through the introduction and expansion of Twitter Cards. The feature now includes product, app, and gallery cards, in addition to summary, photo, and video/audio player. Twitter has also established key relationships in the television industry, most recently with Turner Broadcasting.
Twitter teamed up with Turner and a startup called SnappyTV during March for the NCAA basketball tournament. Bloomberg reports, “Turner provided short highlight clips from the tournament, which were then edited through SnappyTV’s service and displayed on Twitter, which were presented along with ads paid for by AT&T and Coke Zero.”
