Total subscription TV users were estimated at just under 1.3 million as of Q3 2009. There are three main players and the majority of new subscribers in 2009 were acquired by Indovision and Telkomvision. DTH operator Indovision holds a 64% market share with new player, Aora, accounting for just 23,000. Annual growth, though from a small base, is running at 33%. In April 2009, Telkomvision launched YES TV, a low-cost brand offering 29 channels which may kick-start the market.

According to GroupM, TV remains the dominant advertising medium, accounting for 60% of total revenues – around US$1.4 billion in 2008 and forecast to rise to nearly US$1.6 billion in 2009. The Internet has been slow to take off at only 2% of total.
TV audiences are measured by AGB NMR but the subscription TV panel is limited to Indovision and is exclusive to that platform. According to AGB NMR, in the 10 cities monitored, the total TV population is 43 million individuals with a subscription TV universe of 445,000 monitored by 150 people meters.
Synovate’s PAX survey is restricted to Jakarta but the 2009 data shows that 37% of the top tier of society have access to subscription TV and 22% are watching regional channels on a daily basis. Nielsen’s Media Index covers nine cities and reports an 82% weekly reach of regional channels in subscription TV homes.
